Why do I love Hannibal Lecter? Well, I'm positive that it has a lot to do with a certain Welshman named Anthony Hopkins. In reading Thomas Harris' Red Dragon I wished there was more Hannibal. In reading Silence of the Lambs I was captivated with him and with his relationship with the young FBI agent, Clarice Starling. The silver screen version of Silence of the Lambs wow'd me, and I was caught in the web that Anthony Hopkins wove as Hannibal. It was so obvious the two had a fondness for one another, despite Lecter's digs. In fact, I don't believe he would have dug if he didn't care. He just wouldn't have bothered. And in reading and re-reading Hannibal I found that I was intrigued and fascinated by Lecter and hoped that Agent Starling and Lecter would end up together. I would have liked to have read more of them together not even just after they escaped together, could have done without a few parts in the book that didn't involve them. There is such a tension between them, that it would have been neat to see more of it. I've heard Sir Anthony Hopkins has described Hannibal as a dark romance. Indeed. I can't imagine it being any darker, but is there any question in the reader's mind that no matter what Lecter has done and will continue to do in the future, no harm will come to Clarice? For as he so adequately says at the end of Silence of the Lambs, "The world is a much better place with you in it." I do think, however, that if his freedom were threatened the one thing he perhaps covets more than Clarice herself that the choice of letting her live or die would be a more difficult one for Dr. Lecter to make. I find his rich taste for everything fascinating, and his adament distaste for anything rude or trashy equally fascinating. I just can't picture Lecter chowing down a steakburger at Steak 'n Shake, but I can picture him dining and drinking Chianti at Chicago's LaFrancaise Restaurant. I waited patiently for February 14, 2001 with my white truffles and my bottle of Chataeu d'Yquem until I was able to see Sir Anthony bring Hannibal back to life and maybe even put some romance into my life.
