The Man From Texas by Rebecca York, Harlequin Intrigue #625, 43 Lighthouse & Mine To Keep, August 2001, Rating: B

He'd woken up weeks ago in a seedy hotel room -- with no memory and a suitcase filled with cash. "Luke" knew nothing of his past, the money, or the killers who wanted it back. But with the reflexes of a cat burglar, the instincts of a fugitive, and the deadly shot of a gunslinger, Luke couldn't trust the cops. Hannah Dawson was his only hope.

As a former cop, Hannah had devoted her life to putting away bad guys like the darkly sexy, mysterious stranger she was now attracted to -- undeniably, inexplicably, and helplessly. She was in danger herself, but was it from the killers on their trail... or from Luke?

Hannah Dawson is a woman unable to put the past behind her as much as she'd like to try. Despite being hurt in the past she has an easy enough time trusting Luke once she's forced to spend time with him. She commits to helping Luke find his real identity and uses her agency's resources to do that.

Despite his amnesia, Luke is a likeable guy. The author does a good job of painting a picture of him to cast doubt on his character, or at least make it so that there could be a good reason as well as a bad reason for his knowledge in areas. His cunning, however, doesn't seem to have been affected by the memory loss.

Soon the duo end up in Texas on their search for answers to Luke's identity with his pursuers hot on their trail. It's becoming difficult to know who the enemy are - the organized crime people or the government agencies. People from both are after Luke. In Texas, Luke discovers who he is.

A good read, fast paced and it kept you guessing. I gave it a B.
