EVE DALLAS series by J.D. Robb, Rating: A

I'm kicking myself for not starting this series before now. I've had the books for quite sometime, but was hesitant because I'm not a big futuristic fan. Or at least I'm picky. J.D. Robb has set the books forward enough that she can embellish on technological advancements without getting too out there to where we're in the world of Star Trek. This is good -- for me at least.

I love Lieutenant Eve Dallas. I can't say enough about this character. She's strong, honorable, loyal yet weak, unwilling to accept that others actually care for her. Abused-physically and sexually-by her father until she was 8, her time before being found in a Dallas alleyway is all but forgotten to Eve, locked away in the recesses of her mind. As the books move forward, more and more information comes to her (and to us the reader), making it even more amazing that Eve has turned out as well-rounded and honorbound as she has. She believes in right and wrong, there isn't too much gray for Eve, though having met and taken up with Roarke (just Roarke) has made the lines blur some.

Roarke is an interesting man and overall I like him. There are times I really don't like him, though. He's fallible, but the fact that he repeats these behaviors, i.e., drugs Eve so that she'll get some sleep, forces himself along on her official police business when he's not a cop that make me a little angry. In the first book, he even overrode the security system of her apartment and broke in to see her, because he owned the building. He's richer than Midas, so I suppose his behaviors could be chalked up to quirks of the rich and shameless. He does have Eve's best interests at heart, I believe that, so I'm willing overall to overlook his odd behavior at times. Like Eve, he had virtually no one and pulled himself up by the boot straps, making a fortune not always by walking the straight and narrow.

J.D. Robb has assembled quite an ensemble to go with Eve and Roarke's adventures. There's Feeney, the cop body Eve goes to whenever she needs computer assistance. Peabody is a cop Eve's taken under her wing, hoping to bring her onto the detective squad. Mavis is Eve's singer friend who she busted years ago doing grifts. Leonardo is Mavis' designer boyfriend. And there's the butler that Roarke keeps because he was the only man who was ever good to Roarke as a boy, and they have a past together, who seems to look upon Eve with distain. But underneath it all, he seems to care about her, and respect her a good deal.

I've finished the 17th book, PURITY IN DEATH, now and have to say the more I read the more fascinated I am with not just the world that Robb has created but by Eve herself. She's such a complex character, emotionally stunted but still receptive to emotional entanglements - as much as she might claim to hate them. I'm not normally a crier, but I find myself tearing up while reading these books because Robb does such a good job of bringing us into the story, the scene, so that we feel the emotion, the rage, the terror.
