Steve Hamilton has created a likeable and believable character in ex baseball player, former Detroit cop, divorced Alex McKnight. Shot on the job, resulting in the loss of his partner, Alex McKnight retires up to no-man's land, Paradise, Michigan. A desolated town located just this side of the Canadian border in the Upper Peninsula, Hamilton has the misery of the winters down pat.

He came up to Paradise intent on selling the cabins his father built twenty years ago, but instead decided to stay, renting the cabins out to hunters, fishermen, and the dreaded snowmobilers. Alex just wanted to be alone, passing his time drinking Canadian Molsen's at the Glasgow Inn. The poor man seems to get dragged into precarious situations no matter how hard he tries to stay out of it.

His friendship with the Glasgow Inn's owner and his American Indian friend Vinnie Leblanc are a nice backdrop, keeping Alex in touch with humanity. His relationship with St. Sault Marie, Michigan's police chief is colorful and helps keep Alex on his toes at times.

I really enjoy the Alex McKnight series by Steve Hamilton. The setting is intriguing, you really do feel the isolation of the area. They are well-written mysteries that center around a very human main character.
