His Special Delivery by Belinda Barnes, Silhouette Romance #1491

Cal Tucker leaves the church after being stood up at the alter dressed in his wedding tuxedo. A bad day gets worse as he's almost hit by a car. What's worse, the driver of the car was a woman. A very pregnant woman who was in labor. After the baby born, Cal realizes Sara has no place to go, no one to assist her and offers her his home. The offer was made out of friendship neither expecting more to come of it.

Cal is a likeable hero. He bucks against his parents and their wealth, staying true to his heart and his dreams by being a veternarian. The woman he was to marry he realized, perhaps a little too quickly, that he was only marrying to make his parents happy. That neither he nor she would have been happy. His problem is that he feels there is no woman out there who knowing what type of life he could leave would settle for the type of life he wants to lead.

Sara is likeable if not somewhat annoying as the heroine. She's far too forgiving of the baby's father, I thought. She is the type of girl Cal is looking for: down to earth, admires what he does and compliments him on his achievements both to him and to his parents.

We see the feelings develop between the hero and heroine and see them both fight those feelings. They're both independent, both have claimed they're through with the other sex and love. A wrench gets thrown into the system when the hospital misrepresents Cal as being the father of Sara's baby.

A marriage of convenience comes about when the baby's father threatens to come into the picture, which backfires on the couple when his parents stay at their house overnight. Of course, the two have to share a bed then.

Cal and Sara both had issues to deal with, Cal's was just a matter of his mindset that he didn't need a woman. Sara's issues I thought were more complex and I don't know that Ms. Barnes ever truly allows Sara to develop and face those issues. She does get a backbone and makes Cal make a decision, but I just never felt like Sara truly grew.

His Special Delivery was a light, enjoyable read. I would rate the book sweet. The flaws in character development were easy to overlook as both characters were likeable even with their flaws. The tension between the hero and heroine was well developed and well maintained, it was clear from the beginning even as a woman going through labor the two were attracted to one another.
